Meditation is the ability to concentrate or be “mindful”.

We will practice some yoga asana (postures) first. This will help the body to sit comfortably.

We will learn some pranayama  ( breathing exercises) to calm the mind and turn it “inwards”. This is an excellent way to prepare the mind for meditation.

We will practice various meditation techniques learning them well enough to practice at home if desired. We will gradually lengthen our seated time as we progress.

Why Meditate?

Every day we wash our bodies and take care of ourselves in terms of hygiene. We clean our houses, wash our clothes and so on, but what do we do for our minds? What do we do to keep the mind uncluttered, calm, clear and refreshed?

Meditation is a way of cleaning the mind, washing it from within, so that you can be calmer, clearer and happier.

Without meditation, the restlessness of the mind affects you on all levels and prevents you from connecting with the joy within you.

Meditation frees you and brings back your smile.

Everyone has experienced a meditative state in certain moments of their lives; for example, when you are deeply joyful and happy, doing something you love so much that you lose track of time. Just for a moment the mind becomes light and is at ease.

How can you repeat those moments so they occur more frequently in your life? Though meditation you cultivate this state of mind so that more and more it becomes part of your consciousness.

“Concentration is the practice whereby one’s ordinary, distracted, uncontrolled mind is developed to the point that it can remain powerfully, effortlessly, and one-pointedly on whatever object one chooses.”

-Dalai Lama, 1994

“The gift of learning to meditate is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this life. For it is only through meditation that you can undertake the journey to discover your true nature, and so find the stability and confidence you will need to live and die, well.”

-Sogyal Rinpoche, 1994
